Thank You, for visiting Sydney Opera Shade.
Is it very difficult to install one of these shelters? I am concerned about what is involved. Answer : It really helps to have two people for the large sizes, because it can be a little awkward for one person to easily swing the wide & tall aluminum arcs into position. But the "handyman" skills are limited to the use of a drill, wrench and screwdriver. You may Download a set of instructions below, or ask us to send one to you before committing to a purchase.
What if I need the shelter a little wider of narrower? Answer : The design of the central hinge-pins on each side that support the entire structure, alows each of these base plates to be placed up to a foot wider or narrower on the larger models without compromising the strength of the shelter. In this way you can custom fit it to a driveway or pool/play area you wish to shelter.
Is there a problem if I am in an exposed, windy location?. Answer : Our structures are designed to "spill" the wind. Their amazing strength also depends upon them being fixed securely to the ground. We recommend fixing to a sound, concrete slab using the 6 Dynabolts provided But if there is no existing slab, independent island footings or special earth anchors can be used. More information on request. (Note: These structures are so wind resistant that they are being used by surf patrols on nearly 100 Australian beaches).
Is a sloping site a problem? Answer : Not at all. The units are especially good for sloping driveways because the Opera Shade can either be tilted in line with the slope or can be adjusted to stay level while the driveway slopes away underneath. If the driveway has a slope across its width, a small pedestal can be purchased to raise the support point under one base plate. Or you can build your own small support post.
I park under a tree which drops berries and sometimes small branches can break off as well. Is this a problem?. Answer : Our Opera Shades are ideal for these situations because the fabrics are very strong and they are stretched tight like a trampoline which will result in most small objects (including hail up to 1" diameter when the 95% mesh fabric is used) to bounce right off.
I have a boat with a flying bridge which is 10' high overall. Will the Opera Shade be high enough? Answer : Yes. The addition of just 2 standard aluminium pedestals under the 2 base plates will lift the unit by the required height, in this case 3' extra at the lowest point to allow the boat to "drive" thru. Depending on the boat, an alternative might be to tilt up the front or back to give you up to 10' height on one end only, without using pedestals.
Will these fabrics last in strong sunlight?. Answer : The Sydney Opera Shade was designed in Australia which is famous for intense, burning sunlight. These structures have been in continuous, successful use there Since 1992. The 95% mesh fabrics are guaranteed for 12 years under the Australian sun, the 90% for 10 years and the solid fabrics for 5 years.
Over my pool the sun is strongest at one end in the morning and the other end in the afternoon . Do I need to cover both ends of the pool? Answer : The Opera Shade can be tilted according to the angle of the sun, by adjusting the self-locking guy rope cleats.
I am only renting where I live, so can I take the structure with me when I leave? Answer : Absolutely. It was designed for easy relocation. Even though the Opera Shade is very strong, by removing the 6 dynabolt anchors you can dismantle and fold up the Carshade without too much effort.
I want to travel and use my Opera Shade in different locations every few days. Can that be done? Answer : Yes, if you order the special "Extra Fold Option", you will be able to fold it into quarters and put it into a long, banana-shaped bag which can be carried on roof racks. (In Australia, many surf/lifesaver beach patrols put up their units in different parts of the beach every day depending on the surf conditions).
Why is nylon rope used instead of stainless steel cable for the main anchor restraints? Answer : For safety reasons. Visibility was a concern for children running or playing around the Opera Shades at dusk. The nylon ropes are just as strong, but they are much more visible in white and if someone should still accidentally walk into one, the chances of cutting yourself are virtually eliminated because the ropes are thick and flexible.
The Sydney Opera Shade was designed in Australia in 1991 and it is a registered patented design. In Australia the structure was originally called a Carshade but the units are now used for a great range of applications, including as Surf Patrol Shelters on nearly 100 Australian beaches. They are very popular because of their special, triangulated stress distribution concept which makes them very resistant to high winds. The designer is Mark Krawczynski, an architect in Sydney who has won numerous design awards and who worked for a number of years on the world-famous Sydney Opera House. Like this famous spectacular building, the Sydney Opera Shade is also made to not only impress with its unique, flowing style but also to last even in hot and salty environments because all the frames and hardware are made of non-corroding stainless steel and aluminium. The hi-tech design is both modern and timelessly elegant. Its ultimately simple sophistication is the result of much refinement work and R&D. The perfect balance and symmetry of this hyperbolic paraboloid is both exciting and non-invasive, so it will enhance and harmonize with any building location or style. The US distribution center is located in Visalia, California and began operation in May 2000. As demand increases for different colors and fabrics, more will be stocked in the US for immediate delivery.
