NEWS FLASH - Invasion from Mars, this weekend!

This Saturday 21/02/04 , Maroubra beach will be the site of a unique invasion. To coincide with the Metropolitan Surf Championship, over a dozen strange 5m red and yellow structures will be appearing on the beach. Nicknamed the 'hot chili pringle' or 'red diaphragm' by local TV stations, they are not as might be thought, from the red planet of Mars, but are actually made right here in Sydney for the Surf Life Savers Australia (SLSA) as patrol shades. Shortly a total of 15 will appear on all patrolled beaches in the southern district.
Along with a recent change of sponsor for SLSA, the old spider tents have disappeared and have been replaced by these bold new 5m wide
hyperbolic paraboloid tensile shade structures. With fast erection / dismantling, and the ability to withstand winds of 120Km, these unique shade covers will certainty stand out from the rest. And that's what the life savers want to achieve! Safe swimming areas have always been marked out with red and yellow flags, an Australian innovation, recently adopted by the rest of the world. Now these safe swim areas will become even more visible, with these 2.3m high 5.5m long red and yellow covers.
Curiosity is high and many overseas tourists have already been spotted down on Bondi Beach snapping cameras when the first few patrol shades started appearing two weekends ago. With photos of these stunning structures (on our world famous beaches) being seen all over the world, it won't be long before these unique Australian shapes start invading foreign shores!
